Pleiades was founded by seven women jeweler/metalsmiths in 1985. They took their name from constellation Pleiades, the Seven Sisters. Currently there is a core group of ten artists. Members of the consortium meet several times through out the year to share ideas about works in progress and new techniques. Meetings are also a time to exchange information about show and exhibit opportunities and for members to plan for their November show. Featuring the work of women jewelry and metal artists the Pleiades November show and sale is held every year at the Women's Club of Bethesda. Besides the core group, eight to twelve guest artists are juried into the show each year. Starting in 2009, Pleiades will be mentoring several student jewelers, providing them the opportunity to have a joint booth in the show. The students will be those recommended by their instructor, from a college metal arts program in the region. The jeweler/metal smiths of the Pleiades consortium also show and sell their work independently in galleries, juried exhibitions, and fine art and craft shows. Several Pleiades members currently teach classes or workshops in their particular techniques and areas of expertise, others have done so in the past. Pleiades has occasionally held a spring show. The women of Pleiades look forward to interesting opportunities in the future.
